Call for WOE Editorial Team Members

The co-editors of the journal Writing on the Edge (WOE) are excited to announce that WOE will soon become a double-blind, peer-reviewed journal published twice per year. To allow WOE to thrive into the future as a peer-reviewed journal, we are working to first establish an Editorial Team that will manage the day-to-day operations of the journal. The Editorial Team, once established, will also work to expand the current Editorial Board and develop a new Board of Reviewers. 

WOE is seeking applications for three Editorial Team members: Associate Editor for ReviewsAssociate Editor for Social Media, and Copyeditor. Responsibilities for each of these positions are described below. This call will remain open until positions are filled, but preference will be given to applications received by December 13, 2025. The roles are unpaid.

Initial appointments are three-year terms with the possibility for renewal; the editorial transition will begin in January 2025. The Editorial Team, once established, will work to expand the current Editorial Board and develop a new Board of Reviewers.

About WOE

Established in 1989, WOE is an interdisciplinary journal that focuses on writing and the teaching of writing. Our audience is primarily college-level writing teachers and those interested in composition, creative nonfiction, and classroom instruction. 

WOE aims to explore new domains of composition, rhetoric, and writing studies through the sharing of differing viewpoints that bolster and contribute to academic conversations about composition theory and controversial methods. 

Toward that aim, WOE publishes works that capture the experience of writing and teaching and encourage authors to experiment with other forms besides the traditional academic journal article. As is our tradition, we look for a wide range of genres, including personal essays, humor, and fiction, but we are also open to further exploration into multimodal and mixed genres. We publish everything from case studies and interviews to poetry and excerpts of graphic novels. We are interested in articles well-grounded in scholarship that tell us something new about our profession, challenge our established ways of thinking, and encourage us to reexamine our current practices as teachers and writers. Our articles are often driven by personal narrative, and we want our readers to sense the person as well as the scholar behind the writing.

WOE is housed within the University of California (UC) system and owned by the UC Board of Regents. 

Editorial Team 

  • Editor-in-Chief - Articulates editorial goals, scope, and policies; solicits manuscripts; represents the journal at relevant conferences; and chairs the Editorial Board. Reviews reviewer feedback, makes final acceptance decisions, and writes editor letters. Writes editor introductions for new issues. As per policy set by the UC Board of Regents, the Editor-in-Chief holds a faculty position in the UC system. 
  • Associate Editor for Reviews [open position] - Reviews potential contributions and coordinates double-blind, peer-review process. Communicates with authors and reviewers and provides feedback on the process and contributions as needed. Consults with and regularly updates Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editors on status of reviews and the review process. Oversees reviewer board. 
  • Associate Editor for Communication and Social Media [open position]- Promotes WOE and new issues of WOE on social media and email lists as well as at relevant conferences and events in the field. Contributes new content to and oversees the WOE website, which, as of fall 2024, will be hosted on the platform SiteFarm.
  • Associate Editor at Large - Consults with Editorial Team on decisions regarding the day-to-day operations and management of the journal. This position is held by a faculty member in the UC Davis University Writing Program.  
  • Associate Editor for Production - Manages the production of the journal, including typesetting and cover design, and corresponds with authors when working on final proofs. In addition to editing skills, the position requires extensive knowledge of InDesign, a working knowledge of Photoshop, and general page design knowledge.
  • Copyeditor [open position]- Prepares manuscripts for publication following house style guidelines and citation rules. Edits manuscripts for consistency, correctness, completeness, and accuracy. Communicates with authors on questions concerning style. 
  • Managing Editor - Oversees distribution and manages subscriptions. Handles requests for back issues.

Qualifications

  • Associate Editor for Reviews - the person serving in this position should be a faculty member experienced with the double-blind peer review process and with working closely with reviewers and authors. Strong time management, organizational, and communication skills required. 
  • Associate Editor for Communication and Social Media - the person serving in this position should be a faculty member or graduate student with experience using Instagram; Discord; X, formerly known as Twitter; and Facebook and developing content for social media and the web.
  • Copyeditor - the person serving in this position should be a faculty member or graduate student with exceptional copyediting, communication, and time-management skills.

Applications will be reviewed by current WOE co-editors William Sewell, Carl Whithaus, and Rebekka Andersen. Selected applicants will be invited for a 30-minute Zoom interview in January. Final position decisions will be made by January 31, 2025.
